Race Report by Gary & Sally Dack
The race starts on the beach at South Shields and follows the coastline down to Roker Beach at Sunderland. It’s a point to point race with no fixed route for parts of the race (runners are not allowed to run on the pavement or the road) on mixed terrain including sand, grass trail and promenade.
With 1400 entrants it’s an impressive sight lined up along the beach at the start and this year conditions were ideal for running, warm and sunny with a very light breeze.
The event begins with a race within a race as the first male and female to reach the end of the beach at South Shields, then go on to complete the race, win a prize.
It was a low turnout from BMHH this year with only 4 club members gathering at the start for a group photo, thanks to photographer Jacqui Keeley.
The event is organised by Sunderland Strollers with lots of supportive and enthusiastic marshalls and a lot of bewildered dog walkers and seaside visitors on the prom at the end!
According to the website, there was a catastrophic computer failure during this years race so the results are delayed, this never happened before they introduced chip timing, just saying!
UPDATE: Race Results now online –
Well done to Melinda West and Brian Rose (and thanks for the lift Debbie Rose) the other red vests to complete the race today.
Sunderland may be wallowing in League 1 at the minute but the goody bags for this race are Premier League standard and that’s another reason to recommend a few more members to give this race a go next year.
