Whitsun Woodland Trail Race – Sunday 26th May 2019

Race Report by Helen Hill

This race has been going for a few years now, but it is the first time I’ve taken part. I’m familiar with different parts of the course from doing the Club handicap, Stockton Trail Series races and long Sunday morning training runs.

The course is approximately 6.5 miles of trails around Wynyard Woodland Park. It starts with a nice flat section along the old railway line, before turning off to the left (after about 1.5 miles) for an undulating section through the woods. At about 2.5 – 3 miles in, there is a welcome return to the railway line path on the way back to the start.

The water station at the 3.5 miles was definitely needed, as it was a warm morning. Just as you’ve settled into the flat section, the course turns left onto an undulating section around a field of rapeseed. There is a good downhill section back into the woods before a small uphill to the dreaded steps.

At the top of the steps, it took a few minutes to get my legs working again. Once back on the railway line path, I picked up the pace to the finish.

My race plan was to concentrate on effort. This seemed to work as I achieved a good pace on the flat and downhill sections and a steady pace on the up-hills. I surprised myself with a segment PB on the steps!

It was great to see a good mixture of long-standing club members and more recent additions, 23 Marsh House Harriers in total.

I’m not sure what I’m most proud of – being first Marsh House lady home or beating Andrea Clyburn! 😉
