Over the weekend, a handful of our athletes competed in races around the local area. Our senior coach Mike provided a summary below of his day.
So today it was the Ingleby Barwick 5k fun run. I bumped into Owen at the start and he wanted a few tips/guidance on pacing a 5k. We were lined up on the start line and told Owen to start nice and steady and let everyone shoot off, but don’t worry as we will catch them back up.
Gun goes we are off around a grass field, everyone rockets away. We keep a nice controlled start, just getting the legs warmed up. Once onto the cycle track, we started to make our way along the side of other runners. Just a nice steady pace and started to gain ground and pass people. First mile 7:27 pace. Great opening mile and we were still feeling very comfortable.
As we entered the second mile we started to push on more, passing loads more people who were starting to flag by now, but we were feeling strong. Few twists and turns and slight climbs later we completed the second mile in 6:46! We both were still feeling good and strong, working a bit harder now but plenty in the tank still.
2.5 mile in, still holding pace, I told Owen to start pushing on as the finish line was looming. He pushed on more than me and completed his 3rd mile in 6:43, 6:53 for myself and pushed over the line. Wow what a run!
Owen came 7th overall finisher over the line in 21:07 and I got 21:17 in 8th position. Very well done to Owen an excellent paced run and brilliant finishing position.
Also, a brilliant run from Mark Gibson – who was spot on with his target in mind. He maintained a good pace all the way and was round in 30:21. Sub 30 is coming to you very soon. Very strong finish as he came over the line.
Well done to Helen and her girls Sarah and Emma, who were top Marshall’s ringing the bells and very encouraging near the finish!
Well done everyone, and well done to Phil and Lilly who ran Boro 10k!
